That Morning

9:37a.m. — Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the Pentagon and Arlington County found itself at the center of one of the most significant tragedies in our nation's history. At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, forever changing our county and our community. Within moments, members of the military, fire, rescue, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and aligned agencies responded to what would become a complex and dangerous emergency operation.

Arlington County and regional emergency and military personnel worked tirelessly alongside regional, state, and federal partners in the rescue, recovery, and mitigation efforts that followed. They answered the call under extraordinary conditions, demonstrating courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to service.

The events of that day remain deeply woven into the history of our departments and our community.
